Hi Beauties!
TGIF!! I’m super excited to share this exclusive interview I recently had with the beautiful and extremely talented Myleik Teele, Chief Experience Officer & founder of curlBOX.
Check out what she had to say about her booming beauty enterprise!
NB: What were
you doing when you got the idea to start curlBOX?
I was standing in my
kitchen making mango & spinach smoothies with one of my friends talking
about all of these beauty subscription services when it hit me like a lightening
bolt … “WHY don’t we have something like THIS for US?! We need it more than anyone!”
NB:
What makes
curlBOX stand out against the competition?
At this time, we
don’t believe there is anything else on the market quite like curlBOX. Our curation process is unmatched. Our service is unparalleled and our
members are innovators.
NB:
Since you
are a natural hair guru, please share with us your staple natural hair
products.
I wouldn’t call myself a guru but I am hair and product obsessed. I have TONS of products – TONS. My ride or die product is always Elasta
QP Mango Butter Moisturizer. I’ve
been using Sof ‘N Free’s “Nothing But” Clarifying Shampoo lately … Good stuff
right there. Karen’s Body
Beautiful just dropped a whole new line of products and she’s got so many
winners in that, I don’t even know WHERE to begin. Let’s not get me started … This could go on forever.
NB:
Have you
always been natural? If not, when did you make your transition?
I’ve
been natural for a little over decade.
I made my transition after shampooing and blow drying in a salon in
college and seeing how BEAUTIFUL hair that wasn’t relaxed was. I loved the way the curls danced in the
water. The stylist I worked for
had mostly natural clientele. I
begged her to cut my hair off so that I could have curls!
NB:
You are a Shero
(woman hero) to tons of women who want to start their own business. What advice
do you have for these young female entrepreneurs?
Am I? No, seriously! I always love talking to young women
about following their dreams, honoring their process and just being
themselves. It’s the only thing I
know. If you want to start your
own business, start working on your relationships NOW. You’re going to need A LOT of good
relationships to make anything work.
Make sure there’s a demand for your good or service. You need a LOT of people to like
what you’re doing in order for it to profitable. The last thing I’d say is to always have your game face
on. LOOK like you know what
you’re doing, TALK like you know what you’re doing and dare anybody to test you! You got this! It’s yours!
NB:
Would you
make any changes to how you started curlBOX if you knew then what you know now?
I
wouldn’t change a single thing. I
worked with my business advisor and I moved a little faster than he would have
liked me too but at the end of the day, I had to honor MY process. Last month I sent a curlBOX to his wife
and she LOVED it. He sent me this
email and this one sentence made me smile: “You
did an amazing job with this box and the business.” Coming from him,
my entire YEAR was made. He pushes
me every single day to push harder, think deeper and stay focused.
NB:
Where do
you garner your motivation to keep striving to make curlBOX the biggest and most
exclusive natural hair product sampling service?
The members keep me
in the game. I have some hard days
and then I’ll get a random card in the mail that says, “Girlfriend, you’re
doing an AWESOME job!” Or I’ll get
an email from someone that says that they appreciate what I’m doing for them and
that they feel ALL of the love that I put into their box – I sobbed one time
after an email. *smh* But I do it for them. I do it because I
believe that they deserve this kind of amazing and awesome treatment since they
are the BIGGEST SPENDERS in the beauty business. Only makes sense right?
NB:
How
important is networking when starting your own business?
Networking
is the most critical element of starting a business. But most people have networking ALL confused. It is NOT going to the “young
professional mixer” and trading business cards. It’s having solid relationships with college classmates so
you can call them when you need to get right to the top. Networking is having good relationships
with all of your coworkers and everyone on your “level” because you’re all
going to grow together. My one
friend that was an intern at People Magazine when I was an assistant is now the
editor and running things at another mag.
THAT is how it works.
NB:
Tell us
what a typical day is like in the shoes of Myleik Teele?
Oh
wow. LOL. I sleep with my laptop under my bed
(because I go to bed on it and wake up to it and don’t want to step on it in
the middle of the night on my bathroom runs). So I wake up in the mornings and grab my laptop – wait, I
get my phone first. I get the
phone and check emails, text, missed calls, social media. After that I get on the computer and
check email, social media and get up to speed on news and current events. I go to the gym and then sit down in my
office and get to my day. Each day
is different but most days I talk to my business advisor. If I have any challenges, I call him up
and we typically do an hour of coaching.
From there I attack my day.
I check in with my team and see how they’re doing and if they need
me. After that it’s really just
work. I work a lot of hours. It’s 8:55PM and I’m doing this interview
for you … Working. š

NB: Tell us what makes you naturally glamorous?
I’m
naturally glamorous because I’ve set my own standard of beauty and
glamour. I do what I want to do,
when I want to do it … Is there anything more glamorous than that? I don’t live inside anyone’s rules or
judgment. I live my life like it
was intended to be … Free.
Thanks so much for the interview, Myleik!!
