Daniel Fast | Life Update

Day 14 of the Daniel Fast

I know you guys might be wondering where I’ve been but I took a small sabbatical from social media and blogging after the new year. I wanted to join my fiancé in a spiritual journey called the Daniel Fast. You might be wondering what the Daniel Fast is because you’ve never heard of it. To keep this post relatively brief the Daniel Fast in summary is a spiritual journey to draw closer to God by humbling yourself before Him and praying fervently and expectantly. The partial fast consists of whole, plant based foods and water only for 21 days. That means no sugar, no meat, no preservatives or additives and water, only water. The purpose of this diet is based on the actual book of Daniel in the bible.

If you’re wondering, “Where did the Daniel Fast originate?” That’s a great question. The Daniel Fast was first observed by the prophet Daniel in the Bible. On one occasion, Daniel was greatly concerned for his people and sought the Lord’s wisdom during a time of prayer and fasting. Daniel 10:2-3 says, “At that time I, Daniel, mourned for three weeks. I ate no choice food; no meat or wine touched my lips.” The meaning of “choice food” is not clear; however, most commentaries conclude that he ate no bread or sweets. The Message translation sums up Daniel’s eating habits during that time: “I ate only plain and simple food.” Source

Nate did this fast last year and arguably had the best year of his life. I strongly feel that because he was blessed I was blessed. I arguably had the best year of my life last year as well because of his dedication and commitment to this life changing fast. I decided a few months before the New Year even started that I wanted to challenge myself to participate in the fast with him as well. This was not an easy challenge for me because like most people I love food and I love cooking. I enjoy wine and I enjoy it frequently. So, thinking that I would have to give up all my favorite things for at least 21 days (add another 7 days on that because it’s recommended that you transition one week before the fast to not shock your body) was really scary to me. I was more nervous about failing and not being able to finish the fast successfully.

I can honestly say that this fast has been life changing. It’s showed me how strong I actually am and I than I don’t give myself enough credit. Not only did I cook daily and create delicious and vegan friendly meals but I also didn’t even crave wine as much as I thought I would. I almost didn’t make it to my good friend’s vision board making brunch because mimosa’s and yummy brunch food would be present. But after getting through week two of the fast successfully I knew my strength. I decided to attend the event and she had the best vegan brunch prepared for me in addition to some cold and refreshing water. I was not tempted in the least bit t even partake in the mimosa’s. God has increased my strength and has showed me that If I put my mind to something that I can absolutely accomplish it.

Day 12

Starting the year on this wavelength is different for me. Traditionally speaking, January has been a challenging month. I’ve experienced deaths in the family almost every year in January in addition to just really bad news. This year, the Lord has provided and he has showed me that my circumstances do not have to dictate my month. I am so grateful to have experienced this fast with not only Nate but also my mom and future sister-in-law.

I’ve found that I don’t rely on things of the flesh to keep me going, I only need to keep my eyes on Him and he will take care of the rest. I highly suggest this fast if you are in a place of unrest and or unbalance and you simply just want to get yourself back on track. This is a life changing fast where you will find wisdom, peace and strength. It doesn’t have to be the beginning of January to do the fast, it’s something you can do whenever the spirit hits you.
