Tips For Curating The Ultimate Summer Cookout Menu

Curating a Cookout Menu for 4th of July, Juneteenth, Labor Day & Every Summer Gathering in Between

There’s just something about summertime that calls for a good cookout. Whether you’re celebrating Juneteenth with your family, hosting a 4th of July block party, or closing out the season strong on Labor Day weekend, the heart of any summer gathering is always the menu. And not just any menu—a curated lineup of dishes that feel nostalgic, fresh, flavorful, and made with love.

Here are my top tips for curating the ultimate cookout menu that’ll have your guests talking all summer long.

1. Start with the Staples (But Make Them Yours)

Every cookout needs a strong foundation—think burgers, hot dogs, ribs, and grilled chicken. But don’t be afraid to remix them.

  • Swap regular burgers for cheeseburger sliders on sweet Hawaiian rolls
  • Add a dry rub or flavored glaze to wings (hello, honey jerk BBQ)
  • Offer plant-based options like grilled portobello mushrooms or Beyond Burgers for your vegan loved ones

Tip: Have at least one protein option that doesn’t require a bun. Not everyone wants the bread!

2. Level Up Your Sides Game

Sides are where you show off your personality. Instead of just store-bought potato salad, make a fresh dill and mustard version or a warm roasted veggie pasta salad. Other hits:

  • Grilled corn with cotija cheese + Tajín
  • Deviled eggs with a twist (try adding jalapeño or crispy bacon bits)
  • Watermelon, mint & feta salad for a refreshing bite

Pro tip: Have at least one cold salad and one warm side dish. People love variety!

3. Don’t Sleep on the Drinks

The drink table deserves just as much love as the food. Offer a signature drink (alcoholic or not) in a big drink dispenser.

  • Juneteenth punch with red hibiscus tea, pineapple juice, and berries
  • Frozen lemonade slushies with optional vodka
  • Peach iced tea or mango Arnold Palmers

Set out cute cups, fresh fruit garnishes, and a non-alcoholic version for the kids.

4. Sweet Endings Are a Must

Finish strong with a dessert spread that’s easy to grab and go.

  • Mini peach cobblers in ramekins
  • Strawberry shortcake cups layered with whipped cream
  • Red velvet cupcakes for a nod to Juneteenth
  • Ice cream sandwich bar with toppings

No time to bake? Dress up store-bought desserts with fresh fruit, a dusting of powdered sugar, or a drizzle of chocolate sauce.

5. Add a Touch of You

The most memorable menus reflect the host. Add a family recipe that makes people ask for seconds. Include a nod to your culture—whether that’s Jamaican jerk chicken, Southern mac and cheese, or a special Caribbean sorrel drink.

Whatever you serve, make sure there’s heart behind it.

Final Thoughts

Whether you’re lighting the grill for the 4th of July, honoring Black joy during Juneteenth, or soaking in the final long weekend of summer on Labor Day, a thoughtful cookout menu turns a gathering into a celebration. Keep it flavorful, flexible, and full of love.
